THE OLD VARSCHE RIVER; THE STADTSFONTEIN & TUNNEL TOUR
In partnership with FIGURE OF 8, we offer a guided walk as a fun, mountain to sea adventure for the whole family.
Join us to learn about the natural and cultural history of the Mother City, founded and settled due to her water resources. This is an experiential journey through Cape Town's water history, both natural and man-made. The walk takes three-and-a-half-hours. Two-hours are spent walking outdoors along the upper reaches of CAMISSA - visiting a variety of special places connected to Cape Town's water history along the old Vaarsche River, including a visit to some of Table Mountain's artesian springs; and one-and-a-half-hours of adventure below the surface of the streets, in a tunnel that carries the old river to the castle moat. |
COST
R500.00/adult and R200.00/child accompanied by a guardian - for groups of a minimum of 8 people. This includes permits; gumboots and a headlamp for the duration of the tunnel walk.
For larger groups - schools; conference excursions; team building; corporate activities and even birthday parties - we offer reduced prices dependent on the number of people partaking - for a maximum 50 people.
ROUTE
We meet at the boom in Deer Park on Table Mountain, form where we walk a short distance uphill to De Grendel, for a vantage point of both the natural and man-made history of Cape Town before we commence our descent, following the path of least resistance and stopping at a number of special places en-route:
To see photographs taken inside the tunnel - look here; and here to see many adventurous people who have braved the tunnel.

- The Lower Platteklip Waterfall
- The Platteklip Dam and its related infrastructure
- The Kramat of Seyed Haq al Quaderi
- The Slow Sand Filter of 1869
- And meander along the Platteklip Stream, until we arrive at
- Raaswater; The Platteklip Mill; and The Wash Houses - passing the site where the Hafiz's Magic Ring was (possibly) found; across the old boundary between the wilds and the market gardens of the Cape - until we reach the one time largest farm of the Table Valley.
- The old Oranjezicht Farmstead home to Cape Town's first Mayor, Mr. Pieter van Breda.
- The Stadtsfontein in The Field of Springs
- We divert back to the mountain run-off stream, down Gorge Road, passing the Kramat of Seyed Abdul Malik, along a portion of the old Slave Walk to the place where the river disappears underground.
- At a manhole on Buitenkant Street, we descend into the bowel of the city to follow 'the tunnel' to the Nassau bastion at the Castle of Good Hope. From here, you will be transported back to the meeting point in Deer Park.
