WATER MARKS: Once there was a river…
Doung Dala, an Architect, Artist and a social activist spent the six days of the 'Infecting the City Festival': Treasure - in February 2011, marking a pink line along the course of the hidden treasure - where some of Table Mountain's spring water flows - from Molteno Reservoir, down Government Avenue and Adderley Street to Duncan Dock.
Doung's pink line had a hidden message too, it was painted with an environmentally safe pink powder - ingomanamakosi, that is used by Sangomas as a binding element during the process of making umuthi (medicine). Intrigued by what Doung was up to, many members of the public engaged with Doung during this time and learned more about this hidden gem of Cape Town. Water Marks and the process of painting this pink line onto the surfaces of our city whilst engaging with the public in that process, has spread the awareness of this most important resource of water - currently hidden (and wasted) beneath the city's streets. As a social activist he is strategic in the messages that he brings to public attention - "nothing is by chance". Art has long been regarded as elitist and he aims to not only bring art into the public arena by making it accessible to all - literally 'bringing it to the street', but also to use art as a mechanism to educate the public around topical issues.
